Our Client

View Architects residential team takes commissions from large and small developers and householder clients. This project was carried out for a small developer wanting to maximise the value of a former agricultural site.

The Brief

Our client purchased this site with planning permission for the conversion of two former agricultural buildings into individual family homes. View Architects was given the challenge to redesign both conversions and to resubmit the planning application. The objective was to create two unique dwellings with open plan spaces for modern family living that retained the original character and large volumes of the original barns.

The Solution

Our solution created two bespoke low energy homes heated with underfloor heating linked to air source heat pumps. The main living spaces in each dwelling were located in the centre of the building where we were able to take advantage of existing large volumes that invoked the character of the original agricultural structures. Wherever possible original elements of structure - oak beams and natural stone walling - were retained and each property was arranged with a split-level ground floor to add architectural interest and to improve the relationship between the interior and existing external levels on site.

The redesigned barn conversions were constructed using best practice conservation techniques with traditional detailing. Each property was sold very quickly after being placed on the market at a value that provided an acceptable return for the developer.
